Echocardiogram
When Daniel was only four days old it was discovered that his tiny heart had some major complications. At only four months old Daniel had heart surgery. Today he is doing fine but requires regular follow up by the Janeway’s Cardiology Department.
One of the many pieces of medical equipment used in Daniel’s care is the Echocardiogram or echo. This is the safest and best way to produce images of a child’s heart. It is a non-invasive procedure that takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete. It is used to see the structures of the heart, to measure the size and movement of the heart muscle walls and to diagnose possible heart problems. The test is painless and risk free because it uses sound waves (ultrasound) rather than radiation to take moving pictures of the heart.
It is less stressful for our young patient and as you can see parents are able to be with their children during their test as Daniel’s dad, Jim, comforts his young son. The echo gives physicians a better understanding of a child’s heart and the information gained helps them make more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatments.
Thank you for your support, it ensures Daniel and children like him receive the best health care possible.
