Why your donation is so important

At the Janeway we all know that children are not just small adults. Their bodies are entirely different and require very specialized treatment.

Through the continued support and generosity of our Newfoundland and Labrador residents we have the building blocks to support the Janeway as our "Centre of Health Care Excellence".

Your gifts have not only helped to purchase modern medical equipment, you have also funded important medical research and educational bursaries, providing our medical teams with the tools, knowledge and expertise to better diagnose and treat our children.

How Your Donations Are Used

Your Donations at Work - Education

With the rapid advancements in scientific information and technologies, continued education of health care professionals is essential in order to provide safe, effective, high quality care.

Your Donations at work - Equipment

As a teaching hospital the Janeway continues its excellence in child care while offering its staff the tools to ensure that our medical students become the skilled professionals that our children rely upon.

One of those tools is the Video Camera Tower, used predominantly for the evaluation and treatment of Picture 016.jpgorthopedic conditions or to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. The Tower houses a small state-of-the-art, medical imaging device - camera - called an arthroscope that is inserted into the affected area through a small incision.

For example, in the case of knee surgery, the joint will not be fully opened, nor will the patient have a six inch incision on each side of their knee. Instead there will be two small incisions – one for the arthroscope and one for the surgical instruments being used. Minimally invasive surgical procedures means shorter recovery times; less pain post-op; less stress and anxiety on the patient and shorter or no hospital stays.

Benefiting our young patients surgically, this equipment also offers an additional teaching tool to our hospital and its medical professionals. During surgeries not only does the surgeon see what is happening, those that are in the operating theatre can also view the procedure on the Tower’s video monitor or screen. These surgical videos and still photos can then be stored on DVD’s for subsequent classroom teaching and/ or medical research.

Stay tuned for future articles on how your donations continue to help the children of Newfoundland and Labrador.
